Good Morning folks!

Was alerted to this piece in the Guardian this morning.

Quote:
People are putting themselves at risk of an early death by failing to act on the early signs of rheumatoid arthritis, a doctor warned today.

The crippling condition causes swelling and pain in the joints, but these symptoms are often dismissed as an inevitable consequence of ageing or too minor to trouble a GP with.

A study into patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis found that on average, they went untreated for more than six months, and that most of this delay was due to people failing to raise the issue with their GP.

On reading the article I simply had to comment on it. While patient education does need improving we're not alone in this, GP's failing to refer people to a rheumatologist also causes a big delay as found in the select committee report

I'm sure I'm also not alone in speaking to people via the Volunteer Network who have had RA confirmed through blood tests and still aren't referred and are surviving on ibuprofen.

We have work to do :)

Jo.

Dear Jo,

Thank you for your post and yes I agree Docs do not appear to pick up on
our symptoms very easily at all.

Thank you

yes Joanne think your right,

I had to tell a friend he should ask to be refered to rhummy as he has had problems but bloods come back fine! his mother has R.A sero negative but they are just giving him anti inflams which have been helping but as soon as he stops it comes back, I have warned it may be a long time before any outcome! now they say he should change his job!!! as heavy lifting!!

We do seem to have work to do........

I had stiff hands in the morning for ages but didn't go to the doctor as it seemed a bit trivial. I only went when my knuckles really swelled. He immediately said it could be RA - (he is really good at diagnosing less common complaints). Once I got to the consultant it was quite another story. She said it might be RA, was probably some sort of inflammatory arthritis. Take paracetamol and come back in 6 months. I was less than reassured. Fortunately I had to see another consultant at a different hospital about my angeodema. He noticed my knuckles and sent me for a CRP(?) test and within a week I had a call from my GP to say my inflamation level was sky high and I had RA. It still took 2 letters from my GP and a very cross phonecall from me to the consultant's secrtary to get that 6 month appointment brought forward.
Next time I saw my GP he said 'I see they are taking you a bit more seriously now!!'
Keep up the good fight all

It took 7 months before I was diagnosed. My doc went down the 'tennis elbow' rsi, carpal tunnel, knee ligaments route- it wasn't until I saw my osteopath for a back problem, and told her about the rest that I got to having a blood test for RA- she was the one who suggested it.
